The masterclasses were founded in 1986 by the late violin pedagogue Prof. Petru Munteanu who passed away in 2023. They take place in the summer and have earned an outstanding international reputation. The participants gain important performance experience in internal performances and a public closing concert. In 1988, a violin competition was launched in conjunction with the masterclass. The competition is open to young people up to the age of 21 (in 3 age groups: up to 15, up to 18 and up to 21). The 21st International Violin Competition in Kloster Schöntal is tentatively scheduled for the summer of 2027.
